Dover Trash Bags and Pay‑As‑You‑Throw Program

Dover uses a “Bag & Tag” pay‑as‑you‑throw system for residential trash. All household garbage placed for curbside collection must be in official Dover trash bags. The program encourages recycling and reduces landfill costs.

  • Bag sizes & weight limits: 15‑gallon bags (20 lb max) and 30‑gallon bags (35 lb max). Do not overfill.
  • Prices: About $2.34 per 15‑gallon bag and $3.91 per 30‑gallon bag. Bulky item tags cost $10 and must be attached to non‑metal items that are too large for a bag. Metal appliances require a metal tag from Public Works.
  • Where to buy: Bags and tags are sold at City Hall (City Clerk and Public Works), Dover Recycling Center and many local retailers such as Aubuchon Hardware, Dover Paint & Varnish, DiCicco’s Market, Hannaford (Dover and Rochester), Janetos Market, Market Basket (Somersworth and Portsmouth), Middleton Building Supply, Rocky’s Ace Hardware, Shaw’s, Smiley’s Beverage, Downtown Discount Market and Tendercrop Farm.
  • Collection guidelines: Place trash and recycling at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day (no earlier than 4 p.m. the prior day). Recycling should be loose in a bin. Items left loose or in non‑approved bags will not be collected. Detailed information and calendars are available on the City of Dover’s website.
